In the heart of nature - hiking in Fendels
Going for a hike on the Fendels Summer Mountain, enjoying the aroma of the woods, colourful meadows and unspoilt nature: this is the perfect way to spend a relaxing summer’s day with the whole family. From leisurely walks and exciting themed trails to extended hikes and mountain tours: we have picked out the most beautiful hiking options for you.
Family-friendly hiking in Fendels
Many of the easier hikes in Fendels are also very easy to manage with a baby buggy. The following routes are particularly family-friendly:
Fendler Alm and Animal learning trail
A forest path suitable for baby buggies leads from the Sattelboden cable car mountain station up to the Fendler Alm. It takes about half an hour to cover the 100 metres in altitude. Ideal for children – also because the animal learning trail along the way invites them to learn more about the local wildlife through play. A stop at the Fendler Alm offers a wonderful view of the Oberinntal valley.
Hike to the "Wiesele ruins"
The hike from Fendels to the “Wiesele” takes a little longer: You can reach the ruins of the pilgrimage church and hermitage in a leisurely 1.5 hours. This was a popular place of pilgrimage until the 18th century and the ruins are still worth seeing today. Parking for the ascent is available at the Fendels cable car station.
Larch meadow circular hike
The circular hike through the local, traditionally tended larch meadows above Fendels also starts at the cable car parking area. If you wish, you can extend the route and climb up to the “Upper Larch Meadows” or stay on the Larch Meadow Trail. Both paths lead back to the starting point at the end.
Resting at the Sattelklause mountain restaurant
The Sattelklause mountain restaurant is a place of relaxation for young and old alike. While parents relax on the sun terrace, the little ones can explore the easily accessible playground. A trampoline, sandpit, treetop path, slides, swings and a water playground with a pond and raft promise plenty of fun.
Fendels as a mountain of the senses - themed trails
Nature is our living room, the best place to relax and unwind. Its green power, which Hildegard von Bingen spoke of over 1000 years ago, promotes health. You can feel this effect on your own body during a walk on the themed trails on Fendels Summer Mountain.
Forest bathing trail - stimulation for all the senses
On the hiking trail towards Ochsenkopf, you enter the forest bathing trail through a wooden gate. Marked by signs, the path leads upwards in gentle hairpin bends. At the end, you pass through a second wooden gate to the meadow of the Plangger descent. Benches invite you to linger and enjoy the marvellous view. The route zigzags back down the green slope.
The green power of the trees is:
- Source of happiness: Breathing in the forest air has a mood-lifting effect.
- Relaxation room: The cocktail of forest scents, the lush green of the trees and the sounds of nature are a treat for the senses.
- Fitness studio: Hiking on the forest paths stimulates the leg and core muscles.
Barefoot path - consciously feel the forest ground
Originally, our feet had as many nerve cells as our hands; wearing shoes has caused these to atrophy over time. The great freedom for the feet is good for body and soul. The barefoot trail starts at the Eulenweg trail at the Sattelklause mountain restaurant. It leads through woods and meadows without any ascent and ends at the Kneipp facility near the restaurant.
As you naturally walk the barefoot trail barefoot, we have created a special storage area for your shoes: At the start of the trail, you put your shoes in the boxes of the “Patschnlift” and at the end you turn a wheel to retrieve them. Don’t forget the number of the box!
Walking barefoot…
- …strengthens the foot and leg muscles.
- …has a grounding and stress-relieving effect.
- …awakens feelings of happiness from childhood.

Moderately difficult hikes in Fendels
Would you prefer your family hiking trip to be a little more active and sporty? The area has some beautiful routes for this too.
Hike from Ried to Fendels via Zirmesköpfle
From the Ried valley station to the Bichlialm and over the Zirmesköpfle to the Sattelbodenbahn mountain station: you will reach your destination in around 2-3 hours on this panoramic hike from Ried to Fendels and can treat yourself to a delicious refreshment in the mountain restaurant.
Mountain tour to the Anton Renk Hut
Although the Anton Renk Hut is not open to the public, it is in a spectacular location. A fascinating natural spectacle awaits not far from here: the water masses of the Fallende Bach cascade down more than 150 metres.
The hut can be reached via several routes: either from the Sattelboden mountain station via the Fendler Alm and back the same way – or then via the serviced Stalanzer Alm to Ried. For a more challenging day tour, choose the other direction, from Ried via the Stalanzer Alm to the hut. After the descent via the Fendler Alm to Sattelboden, the cable cars will take you back down to the valley in comfort.
Ochsenkopf and Roter Schrofen
The route from the Sattelklause mountain restaurant towards Ochsenkopf and Roter Schrofen is also challenging but rewarding. The trail leads past the Mathonalpe and the Ochsenkopf through glowing fields of alpine roses to the “Stoanig Mannle”.
If you like, you can then “take along” the Mittagskopf and its cairn and continue from there to the Roter Schrofen. Once you reach the summit cross, you have a clear view in all directions – from the Kaunergrat to the gleaming white Kaunertal Glacier. Follow the signposts back via the Fendler Alm.
Riding down instead of descending - mountain carting & trail biking
Finally, a tip: why hike down from Sattelboden to Fendels by foot when it’s so much more fun on a mountain cart? Full speed through forests and meadows to the valley station – it’s not just children’s eyes that will light up. And if you like speed on two wheels, you shouldn’t miss the varied trail bike route from Fendels to Ried!
